      From that paper...

The abnormalities found in the hematologic examination could not be used to suggest the CDV infection since they were also frequent in the group used for comparative purpose. In experimentally infected animals, frequent hematologic findings are lymphopenia, sometimes associated with leukopenia or leukocytosis with left shift, anemia, and rarely thrombocytopenia. Several hematologic abnormalities have been reported in natural occurring distemper encephalomyelitis, however they are frequently absent or non-specific in naturally infected dogs.

Although the literature claim that the acute CDV encephalomyelitis takes place during severe immunosup- pression, ours dogs suffering from acute demyelination (n = 2) were not lymphopenic. Chronic CDV lesions coincide with recovery of the immune system (Vandevelde and Zurbriggen, 1995), nevertheless 3 out of 5 dogs suffering from chronic encephalomyelitis were lymphopenic.

In our investigation 100% (8/8) of the cases with the post mortem diagnosis of distemper were presented with lymphocytic pleocytosis. This finding was found in only 33.3% (4/12) of the dogs from the group used for comparative purpose. Lymphocytic pleocytosis (>5 cells/ll) may suggest the diagnosis of CDV infection, however, not all dogs infected with CDV will have changes in CSF. Nevertheless, others inflammatory diseases of the CNS may be presented with lymphocytic pleocytosis.
