Theory vs Practice- Parvovirus

Saurabh Saxena just read from sum book ,in case of parvoviral enterits-"in most situations lactated ringer solution with an additional 10-20mEq of kcl is adequate.the use of 5%dextrose with the lactated ringers solution is advantageous becoz of propensity of young pups to develop HYPOGLYCAEMIA as a result of fasting and concurrent sepsis.RL with 5% dextose can be purchased from manufacturer or 100 ml of 50%dextrose can be added to 1lit bag of RL".
has anyone used this combination.need comments and personal experiences???

Parvo is a case of severe peracute dehydration due to vomiting and loose motions. I will never use anything like 50% dextrose as further diuresis can make life more misrable. more over if u add high sugar drips , it will continue to have more loose motions and condition may deterote very badly in pups.
Rl is useful but huge quantity is going to cause problem. I will prefer using Rl small quantity , may be 1by 4 or total fluid need and the rest with DNS.
These days I use solutions called Normolyte P & M . P referes to pediatric and M refers to maintenance. we can use this happily in addition . KCl , yes, u can but ur Rl supplies it allready. May be in some cases we can try soda bi carb!!

In nutshell, I have not used this combination and I feel it will never help a parvo affected dog.

    • Joseph Cyrus ‎50% dextrose in a an equal volume of Rl will be diluted. you cant get 50% in India. There is no harm. there is a need of at least 40me / litre of K in RL for diarrhoea cases. Your RL is not sufficient at all. I like to use more RL and then boluses of D25% where possible.
