Nassem N. Naimi what would you do if vaccinated a puppy and he came back after 4 hours very sick :) how you can tell the owner that their animal's disease is not caused by vaccination

    • Nassem N. Naimi BTW the puppy was check very well before vaccination as I got his sister sick few days ago (in another house but same breeder) so I made a very thorough check

    • Nassem N. Naimi I know but what do you do in these cases

      Tough situation, Dr. Nassem.
Here, the owner's faith on you is a big criteria. In majority of cases, the sickness is due to some other reason, but vaccine reaction/faulty route of administration can not altogether be ruled out (PLEASE BE CLEAR THAT I AM GIVING A GENERAL EXAMPLE; NOT REFERRING TO THIS CASE OF YOURS!!)
Calming the owner and immediate attention to the animal, are a few of the things that should be done.
When the owner is ready to understand things, s/he can be made aware of the facts.
The most important thing is to ascertain what happened after the animal left your clinic and till he started getting sick; did he have something to eat before or after the injection, any other medicine was given, any other thing?? The chain of events should be scanned and arrive at most possible outcome.
If all else is found to be OK, then the owner has to be explained that in very rare cases, the vaccines MAY cause an adverse reaction, like all other medicines could.
      I hope it helps.

very sick means how sick..what symptoms..if just fever, anorexia, or joint pains..it may b due to vaccination..as u said just 4hrs time..small dose of paracetamol with sum antacid can do the trik..but if sumthing else like vomiting loose motins..cant say..difficult situation..but shud chck for vaccine reactions also..thymoid reactions ..in whch cases WBC may rise to unbellivable levels..small doses of predni can solve..

    • Premal Darji if loosemotions and vomiting or HGE..thn explain the owners its not due to vaccine..as vaccination in a infected animal also does not increse the infection as v use dead viurs or just virus protein whc are not infectious..thr r various documents or the literature available with the vaccine to prove ur point..
      22 July at 10:48 ·
    • Nassem N. Naimi What happened the animal was severly depressed not active at all and fever 39.5 c in addition to mild pneumonia
      22 July at 10:59 ·
    • Premal Darji sudden develpment pnemonia??? not possible with vaccinations..but mild fever common..of corse thr r other resons also..just tret symptematically dr. dont get worried..

    • Nassem N. Naimi
I am not worried as much as I am kind of angry
I did check that puppy pretty well before espicially the lungs (as I said I got his sister and she got weird sounds in her lungs but no fever)
but then when he came back!! after just couple of hour he got these sounds.
like I hardly heared his breath 1st time second time it good a noise !!! :@
      22 July at 11:19 ·
    • Premal Darji ne medicines given orally by the owner..that ha wud hav aspirated???
      22 July at 11:25 ·
    • Nassem N. Naimi
No medication food was all ok the only abnormal thing was little gases cranially in the abdomen (on palpation) founded 3 days before the vaccination and found also t he day of vaccination but NO diarrhea
everything was healthy everything was perfect

Sounds like nothing to do with vacc if signs were pre-existing; however, as a caution, I tend not to vaccinate if *anything* is wrong - if there is a mild problem that the immune system is fighting, I cannot help by making it fight even more things; and, as you note, owners will always blame the vet and the vaccine if possible! All you can do is logically point out that the things were found beforehand.

Sometimes illness can be caused by vaccination. I tell the owner that if this is what the "dead" form of the diseases can do, imagine what the "live" forms could do - therefore better to vaccinate!!!

(Only exception is of course the rare event of severe anaphylaxis - steroids, supportive therapy, and rethink the vaccination plan....)

    • Nassem N. Naimi I gave the puppy Antibiotic is that wrong ???
I was like loosing the vaccine better than loosing the puppy
      22 July at 12:48 ·
    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma Nah, giving an antibiotic is never wrong to a pyrexic young animal!
      22 July at 12:53 ·
    • Nassem N. Naimi but we lost the vaccination true :)
so we should start from the begnining :)
      22 July at 12:55 · · 1 person
    • Premal Darji antibiotic and anti pyretic needs to b given..u can reshedule the vaccination once pup is better..observe for a day or two..with mild pyrexia or antibiotics u dont loose vaccine..
      22 July at 15:54 ·

    • Joseph Cyrus good it ended well. It happens, its all part of the game.
      22 July at 17:51 ·
    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma Naz - vaccine should be fine as long as no steroids were given. Antibiotics / antipyretics fine.

All is well - glad to hear it :oD

‎1.to owner say bluntly --no vaccine cant make the puppy sick (( if you have done complete physical exam and noted the parameter on record, making sure that the puppy was not sick at the time of vaccination)).
2.you can very well use antibiotic with vaccine
3.mild pyrexia and anorexia --- means that the vaccine was effective and the puppy was healthy ---..............

    • Gautam Unny prednisolone would be better as its shorter acting and will not supress antigen formation for long. i prefer it over dexa.

  1. I think only Avil can do. Why use steroids at all then? Brand change of vaccine may help. Sometimes vehicles are allergens.
