Soda bicarb & KCL

Swarupmay Majumdar Can anyone, tell me about the use of

Soda bicarb and KCl in Dogs and cats! Get confused becoz the

way books tell , it seems I need to do some test....and all! plz

suggest when, where and how do I need to use them!

    • Premal Darji standard KCL u can use in ne case with fluids..i usually use in all my gastro cases..renal cases u need to test and thn use.

      soda bicarb not used many a times..

      usually mixed for normal case 5 ml in 500 ml saline..RL alredy contains it..so no need to mix in it..

      if serum potassium levels more thn 3.5- add 5 ml in 500 ml- rate-20 ml/kg/hr

      3-3.5- 7.5 ml in 500ml..and so on..

      but mostly u will need 5 ml in 500 ml for gastro and vomiting cases and cases whr u lose K+

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma Yeah, you need to be careful. Too much of either of these can kill your patient.

      Monitoring: K+ is simply measuring potassium. HCO3 - don't administer if you haven't got blood gases.

    • Premal Darji picture of acidosis and alkolosis not so clear in my mind..so dont use it..accept for sum senior vet tells me to do it..

    • Sajayan Sahadevan I have used Sodabicarb in dogs only in Renal Failure cases to neutrilize the urinary acidity.

    • Premal Darji hav used soda bicarb orally..in cases of cystitis with acicidic PH..
