Anorexia, and pussy eyes- kitten

Sumit Virmani My 1st cat case:
Owner calls with H/O a kitten, about a month old, (supposedly) abandoned by its mother, although mother is seen nearby an a regular basis. He doubts that the mother is not feeding the kitten. He tried feeding various kinds of home foods to the kitten, out of generosity, but the kitten is not interested.
He calls me with the problem of eye swelling/kitten not opening its eyes.

My opinion: The kitten is not abandoned; most likely the owner has not seen it being fed by the mother. Regarding eyes, maybe its normal, because it takes about 3 weeks for the eyes to be completely open; but will have to see the kitten to say anything more.

Any specific suggestions??

Check the eye before opening it if there is puss or dry puss then open the eye and clean it with warm normal saline and cotton then use Tetracycline or Phenicol ointment. with general antibiotic it could be Feline upper respiratory tract disease in that age :).

Thanks, Dr. Nassem. Yes, the eyes had green pus and the eyelids were somewhat swollen and difficult to open. I cleaned them with NSS and instilled gentamicin eye drops.
And yes, the kitten was very weak. I advised to feed commercial weaningmilk, but the owner was reluctant to buy large pack !! So advised to give diluted & boiled cow milk via sterilized feeding bottle.
I think fluid therapy should help, but i could not find a vein !

    • Nassem N. Naimi and SC will be good if their temperature were ok to high but a cold kitten it is like poisoning it you should increase their temp. by warming pads

      Thanks, everyone.
Sadly, the kitten didn't survive. It was (apparently) doing OK but developed abdominal swelling & tachypnea 2 days later. By the time i reached it, it was too late.
I suspect viral/bacterial infection as the most likely cause.

    • Sumit Virmani I know its tough to admit failure, but i hope to learn from my mistakes, specially the fatal ones !!

    • Nassem N. Naimi Man, Kittens always die especially young one, This is not a failure dont worry, I got almost the same case but like little worse and it is kept on very intensive therapy but seems today is her last day if it didn't get better (after 1 week treatment course) :(

As we grow up as vets we learn that death is inevitable! but we can only care , nurse and shower our love. Your being there to see the kitten and helping them take care in better way and presenting the case helped u and everyone participated here. but more than anyone, Now u r more experienced. next time it will be more fun and challenging.

I enjoy cat as a patient becoz they need a total diffrent level of understanding. Neither they are cows nor are the dogs. As we are getting more exposure to cat, we feel that Cat in itself need specialization. Plz join the event and enjoy being a feline vet

Dr. Swarupmay very nice words it is so true.
Critical care patient has their own flavor as few will survive but the one that will survive will give you a happiness that will make you forget all the pain you had before.

We should have a very good relationship with death as he became my friend now( I know it sound crazy), but working in a shelter for 5 years made me see at least 5 animals dieing a day it was so difficult in the beginning but then understanding death as a part of the life cycle will make it easier but never will be easy as it still has it's own flavor of pain.

Be strong, never stop, never feel down (even though you can't avoid it when a patient die.) but try to get over it soon.

and we are all here to help each other. we should talk about it as it is not easy!!!

I believ no one vet can say he is the best , may be he is experienced that death is inevitable! With time, the more we care and prove our motive that we love our job and dedicate ourselves in it; more people flock around us! it happens to every vets that some animals die, some owner force the animals to be on others vets table, so owners speak good, some just praise and some just ... but to be frank we should remain un touched by all these things becoz at any day anything can happen as nothing more than care and love remains in our hand! so my friends, love the job u do and be happy that u r one chosen to be a vet- the real one who loves to save life! of any animals.

    • Gurpreet Singh Chahal Dr. Virmani, u had mentioned swollen/ enlarged abdomen. Had the kitten been urinating an deficating? Mostly u have to stimulate them to do so and we forget to inform the owner.

    • Sumit Virmani Yes, it had been doing it normally after i visited it on the 1st occasion and told the owner to start boiled diluted milk.
      Thanks.
