Injecting cats

Nassem N. Naimi A quick question:
When giving injection to cats especially painful once do you think using a larger gauge needle would be better for example instead of 21 using 19??? I tried it and it works well but want to hear other vet's opinion!!! (increase the gauge will increase the speed of the injection especially in thick irritating injection)
ONLY S.C. !!!

    • Gurpreet Singh Chahal It does help using a bigger gauge needle. Its my experience only. We use it at the same force to administer the inj. So medicine comes out fast, but with lesser force so less trauma to the the tissue.

    • Gautam Unny it does make a difference, its simple physics. if the bore is smaller the drug passes with greater velocity making it more painful. larger bore, less pressure, les pain. i do it all the time

    • Sumit Virmani I guess, 20" or 22" for adult dogs is good enough, Dr. Gautam?
The needle size that comes with a standard 2 ml syringe is 24".

In cats for example giving an injection especially painful once will increase the chance of being injured.
I prefer to use up to 20g needle I know some will not agree but in my experience anyway it will be painful especially when I give Metronidazole SC and I need to give 5-7 CC

I usually use a 25-27G in any patient, so long as the medication will pass through easily. Does reduce responses to most medications, particularly IM.

Not sure about the specific example of painful meds; I can see a benefit to a large gauge needle (just getting all the medication in asap!!!)
