Calici isn't usually fatal, Joseph. There was one outbreak I think in Australia of a more serious variant which produced 50% mortality in the early 2000s, but that hasn't been reproduced as far as I know (and even then, there was 50% survi...See more

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma This sounds more like FHV (usually more severe). As for all viruses, treatment is supportive only. Fluids, some form of antibiotic, mucolytics... and prayer...

    • Joseph Cyrus Raj In bangalore there has been reports of extensive calici virus fatal out breaks in wild felines, these has been confirmed. There are reports of calici fatal infections in cheetahs I think its there in fowler or some other wild animal book. Came across it during an Pg assigmnet for course in wildlife. We have has similar symptoms at our shelter and we have had deaths. FHV possible yes, but there are strains of calici that are fatal.

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma I had a chat with the feline medical types - have you any refs for that? To date, the Australian case is the highest mortality rate carried with FCV. Not doubting that FCV can be fatal; but mortality rates above those of FHV haven't been reported; if you have such data, write it up forthwith - we need it to be in the public domain.

    • Joseph Cyrus I will try and look up to give you the references and outbreaks at Bangalore. I am just in this phase of moving out of banagalore by the end of the month so time and resources are a bit stretched. Will try my best.

    • Nassem N. Naimi Guys I beleive Pneumonia is go more toward Calici than Herpes and the ulcers in the nose and oral cavity are more indicative for Calci more than FHV do you agree (even though wont change the treatment course )

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma I should preface this by saying I'm a surgeon rather than a medic - so I asked the medics' advice. Their line was that pneumonia can occur with either Calici or FHV, but is usually a result of superinfection with Bordetella. Doxycycline and supportive care recommended.
