How to increase platelets levels

Gagan Gaudi What can be done if prednisolone fails to increase the platelets level even @ a dose of 2 mg/kg. Can Vincristine be used in such cases. And How to diagnose auto immune hemolytic thrombocytopenia in dogs.

    • Gautam Unny there is anecdotal evidence that papaya tree leaves crushed and the juice given every hour raises the platelet levels. i have seen it many times but does not work every time. no harm trying it out. most human hospitals use it in dengue cases

Rahima - don't fear vincristine too much - it's a very useful drug. As a thought, try looking up the side-effects to cotrimoxazole or prednisolone! Again, huge numbers of potential pitfalls, but they aren't so common as to outweigh the bene...See more

    • Rahima Razak no i meant to tell that if vincristine given in wrong route or away from vein or spills in our hand its so toxic ....... so told to try avoiding it in situations like to increase the platelet.... i feel predinisolone is more safer, IgG can be given intrvenously(present research going on). avoid use of cephalosporins, quinidine, heparin, fluconazole, aspirin, digoxin,chlorpheniramine...these drugs on longer use cause thrombocytopenia......... but never heard of vincristine... and really scaredof its risk factors..

Ah, you've made the mistake of reading a data sheet. Honestly, try looking up the side effects of pretty much every drug you use. Steroids and pancreatitis, NSAIDs and renal failure, Chloramphenicol and aplastic anaemia, TMP-S and, wel...See more

Diagnosis of IMT is through combination of factors, but it's an exclusion diagnosis, so you need to rule out other causes...

    • Rajshankar Tony Sarma Other thought on the side-effects thing - I guess that all immunosuppressives are basically undesirable - but the patient's going to die if you don't do it, so there's not much to lose.

    • Gautam Unny ‎@rahima, dont fear the vincristicine coming out, just infuse it in some plain saline and give it as a drip. once a proper i/v line is established the chances of it coming out nd subsequent phlebitis is rare. we use it very commonly as there is a lot of tvt here in delhi.
